Teeth Whitening in Pittsburgh
Reverse Stains And Yellowing
If you’re unhappy with your smile due to stains caused by the natural aging process, drinking coffee or wine, or tobacco use, teeth whitening from Dr. Mauro at North Hills Family Dental is an efficient, cost-effective way to restore your smile. As an experienced cosmetic dentist in Pittsburgh and North Hills, Dr. Mauro can remove external tooth stains, help you brighten your smile, and boost your self-confidence.
How Teeth Whitening Works
Professional teeth whitening products use the same basic active ingredients, which are known as peroxides. Peroxides, like carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide, are powerful bleaching agents.
Volatile oxygen molecules in peroxides react violently with surface stains on your teeth, and the reaction causes the chemical bonds holding the stains to break. In turn, this bleaches away the stain and whitens the enamel of the tooth. Peroxides can be used to treat just about any external tooth stain, but cannot be used to treat internal stains.
In-Office Vs. At-Home Whitening
What’s Right For Me?
We offer both in-office and at-home whitening at North Hills Family Dental. In-office whitening uses a very powerful peroxide, as well as an ultraviolet (UV) light. During the process, Dr. Mauro will clean your mouth and “paint” the whitening agent on, then use the UV light to excite the peroxide molecules. You can expect your smile to whiten by up to 5 shades or more in a single appointment. This makes in-office whitening better if you are looking for immediate results.
Take-home whitening uses a custom-built set of trays, which are filled with professional-grade whitening agents. Over a period of a few weeks, you’ll wear these trays as directed by Dr. Mauro. Your teeth will whiten gradually, and this take-home option allows you to treat yourself in the comfort of your own home. Because the results are not as immediate, this is a better option for those who want to whiten their teeth but would prefer a more subtle result.
Understanding The Benefits Of
Teeth whitening has a number of great benefits. You’ll feel more confident about your smile and your teeth, and you’ll look younger, as stains and yellowing tend to make your face look older. In addition, both take-home and in-office whitening are very affordable and require absolutely no invasive surgery. Patients report minimal discomfort, which is usually limited to temporary and minor tooth sensitivity for a day or two after the procedure.
What Is Zoom
Zoom teeth whitening is a type of in-office whitening treatment developed by Philips. It’s one of the most well-regarded professional cosmetic dentistry solutions on the market, which is why Dr. Mauro specializes in Zoom whitening in Pittsburgh and North Hills.
Similar to other types of teeth whitening, Zoom teeth whitening uses a powerful hydrogen peroxide whitener that’s applied directly to your teeth, and bleaches away surface stains. However, it uses a special formulation that includes compounds like Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (ACP) that help protect enamel and reduce sensitivity during and after your teeth whitening treatment.
Another unique aspect of treatment is the “Blue LED” light technology developed by Philips for Zoom whitening. This light is used to excite the hydrogen peroxide molecules applied to the teeth during the whitening process, boosting their efficiency and effectiveness.
This means that Zoom teeth whitening can deliver a smile that’s up to 8 shades brighter in just 45 minutes, which makes it a highly-effective whitening solution. It’s an especially great option for patients who want a whiter smile for a special occasion, such as a wedding, a business conference, or a photo shoot.
If you’re interested in whiter teeth in North Hills or Pittsburgh, Dr. Mauro is here to help you explore your options for in-office whitening with Zoom, or for take-home whitening. Both solutions will provide you with a beautiful, white smile that will last you for years to come with proper care.
How Does Zoom
Teeth Whitening Work?
To begin the process at North Hills Family Dental, your mouth will need to be professionally cleaned to remove plaque, tartar, bacteria, food particles, and any other debris. This ensures that the Zoom peroxide whitener can be applied to your teeth evenly for the best results.
Once your mouth has been cleaned, Dr. Mauro will apply a special protective compound to your gums in order to protect them from the peroxide whitener, which can irritate the soft tissue of your mouth. Then, Dr. Mauro will apply a set of cheek and lip retractors to your mouth, which will expose your teeth and keep your lips and cheeks away from the whitener.
After this, he will apply the Zoom whitener directly to your teeth, covering the front of each tooth completely to ensure consistent results. Once the whitener has been applied, he will point a Zoom Blue LED UV lamp toward your teeth, and leave the whitener in place for about 15 minutes. You’ll just sit back, relax, and let the whitener work.
After 15 minutes, you’ll rinse the whitener away. Then, Dr. Mauro will re-apply more whitening compound and repeat the process, depending on your current level of staining and your desired level of brightness. Most patients get 3 applications of whitener, so the typical treatment time is about 45 minutes.
Once your final application is done, your teeth will be coated in an anti-sensitivity paste and you’ll be sent home with a few simple instructions on how to care for your teeth and reduce post-whitening tooth sensitivity.
