Root Canals in Pittsburgh
Get Help For Infected Teeth
If you have a mysterious toothache that won’t go away after 1-2 days, your tooth may be infected, and you may need to get a root canal from Dr. Lawrence Mauro.
Without proper treatment, an infected tooth can cause you a lot of pain and discomfort, and eventually will result in the death of your tooth. But root canal therapy from North Hills Family Dental can help. Learn more below, or contact us now to schedule an appointment.
Under The Basics
What Is A Root Canal?
Root canals are used to treat infected teeth. This condition occurs when the outer layers of tough enamel and dentin are destroyed, and the inside “pulp” becomes exposed to bacteria in the mouth. This usually happens due to an untreated cavity, but can occur due to oral trauma, such as a broken tooth.
The pulp contains blood vessels and nerves, and keeps your tooth alive. Over time, the infection will destroy the pulp and kill your tooth without proper treatment. Root canal therapy is used to prevent this.
In a root canal, your tooth will be opened up, and Dr. Mauro will clean away infected material, disinfect the tooth, fill it with an inert rubber material to strengthen the interior, then cover it up with a filling or crown to prevent further damage.
How Do I Know
If I Need A Root Canal
The most common sign of an infected tooth is a serious, painful toothache that persists for more than 1-2 days. You may also notice inflammation and discoloration of the gum tissue near your tooth, or discoloration in the tooth itself.
Tooth sensitivity and tenderness is also a common sign of either a deep cavity or an infected tooth. If your tooth is sensitive when chewing and biting, or when you consume hot/cold foods and drinks, you may want to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mauro.
Since infected teeth also commonly occur due to oral trauma, make sure you see Dr. Mauro for an oral exam if you crack or damage one of your teeth. Oral trauma can make you much more susceptible to a tooth infection, even if the damage seems minor.
Does It Hurt
To Get A Root Canal?
No. Modern root canals are only about as invasive as dental fillings, and Dr. Mauro will numb your mouth to ensure you don’t feel any pain or discomfort. We also offer sedation dentistry at North Hills Family Dentistry, so you can be sedated during your appointment and relax while you’re in the dentist’s chair.
