Because preventive care starts with early detection and comprehensive care, call us at 412-364-1477 for a consultation for you and your family.

What are the Symptoms of Oral Cancer?

Dental Patient Room

Not all changes in dental health are symptoms of oral cancer, but if you have one or more of the following symptoms a visit to the dentist for a free oral cancer screening can put your mind at ease.

  • Change in the way your bite forms
  • Red or white patches on the gums
  • Sore in the mouth that doesn’t go away
  • Difficulty chewing eating, swallowing, or speaking
  • Ongoing pain, tenderness or numbness in or around the mouth
  • Growth of a lump, rough spot or eroded area in the mouth

How to Reduce Risks of Oral Cancer

Preventive Tips to Protect Your Overall Health

Research shows that smoking and excessive alcohol consumption in adults over the age of 50 contribute to higher risks of developing oral cancer, while the human papilloma virus (HPV) may also lead to the development of oral diseases. To reduce risks of oral cancer your doctor may recommend refraining from alcohol consumption and smoking, introducing more fruits and vegetables into your diet and using sunscreen regularly to protect the face and lips. Maintaining a healthy dental hygiene routine with six month appointments and regular screenings can also play a significant role in preventing oral cancer or treating it early.

Free Cancer Screenings in Pittsburgh!

Simple Screenings Using Oral ID

Our Oral ID’s fluorescence technology uses a blue light to easily identify signs of oral cancer, pre-cancer and other abnormal lesions at their earliest stages, before they become harder to treat. Each screening is fast, painless and effective by shining a light on the mouth to identify any issues. Although the process is simple, many Americans don’t have access to these screenings. When early detection can have a significant impact on being able to treat oral cancer early we advise making an appointment with our office every six months. To schedule your visit give us a call at 412-364-1477. We’re happy to use our exceptional preventive services to help you and your family stay healthy at every appointment!
